What to look for in a trainer

A good trainer is smooth, nonporous and easy to hold. You should be able to set the depth yourself and remove it at once. Width matters more than length at the start, so a slim diameter is the right first choice for most people.

Our selection checklist

  • Platinum-cure, body-safe silicone with clear material information.
  • A flared base, ring or long handle for control.
  • A smooth surface with no rough seams or sharp edges.
  • Slim to medium diameters suited to step by step progress.
  • Easy to wash, and safe to boil when there are no electronics.
  • No added scent, flavor coating or numbing finish.

Safety notes

Use plenty of water-based lube, breathe through your nose and stop at any pain. Never use a trainer after drinking or when your throat is sore. Wash before and after every use and keep each trainer for one person unless it is fully cleaned in between.

Our editorial buying guide

Buy for the size you can use comfortably today, not the size you hope to reach. If you expect to move up, a silicone trainer set gives smaller steps than buying single trainers one by one. Check the retailer's material details, care instructions and packaging before you order. Our deep throat trainer guide explains sizes, lube and cleaning in more detail.
